Bibliometrics is a method based on quantitative and statistical analysis of publications. This may involve simply charting the number of publications emerging in an area, perhaps focusing on the outputs from different countries in different fields and how they are evolving over time.
Impact analyses examine citations to assess, for example, the most influential pieces of work in specific areas. This involves using tools such as the Science Citation Index or text mining which requires: building algorithms for extracting multiword phrase frequencies and phrase proximities (physical closeness of the multiword technical phrases) from any type of large textual database; and using the interpretative capabilities of the expert human analyst.
