Conferences

Nature of the method: Qualitative Methods

Conferences are events lasting from a few hours to a few days, in which there is typically a mix of talks, presentations, and discussions and debates on a particular subject.

Conferences are common settings for networking, knowledge exchange and consensus building. The events may be more or less highly structured and “scripted”: participants may be assigned specific detailed tasks, or left very much to their own devices. Participants comment on recent reports and take the opportunity to present the current status of their projects and research activities. Feedback is used to improve the scope of the foresight processes and/or validate its outcomes. The meetings may be used to spur people to action based on the results of earlier stages of foresight.
