Horizon Scanning

Nature of the method: Qualitative Methods

Horizon Scanning involves observation, examination, monitoring and systematic description of the technological, socio-cultural, political, ecological and/or economic contexts of the actor in question – a country, industry, firm, organisation, etc.

Scanning techniques may be more or less formalised, systematic and comprehensive ways of searching for and collating information via literature reviews, SWOT, Web searching, bibliometric or patent analyses, etc. It is an activity often commissioned to academics or consultants, some of whom specialise in monitoring trends as reported in mass or scientific media.
