Role Play/Acting

Nature of the method: Qualitative Methods

Role Play/Acting requires reflection, imaginary interaction and creativity.

The method tries to answer questions such as: If I were person X, how would I
deal with problem Y? Or, if we were country X, what would be our position
with regards to issue Y? Role play is an interesting and attractive method,
though limited by the difficulty in suppressing one’s own tendencies and
emulating another party’s beliefs, values, viewpoints, etc. In foresight work,
gaming may be employed, in which several participants role play the
responses of individuals or groups to unfolding situations.7 Participants in
role playing workshops are often provided with detailed profiles of the
stakeholders involved in the acting. Such profiles may be circulated in
advance, and themselves result from analyses such as literature reviews and
targeted interviews.
